In 19th century Maine, the swaggering, carefree carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries troubled millworker, Julie Jordan. Their tempestuous love affair stirs a fury of scandal in their small, seafaring town, alienating the young couple in their time of need. After Billy's untimely death following a botched robbery, he is given the chance to return to earth and put right his mistakes. Billy instills a sense of hope and dignity in both the child and her mother whom he left behind in a dramatic testimony to the power of love.
